The INAH, Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia of Mexico was founded in 1939 under the presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas with the goal of preserving, investigating, and disseminating knowledge of the country’s rich heritage. Part of its task has been the restoration, conservation, and cataloging of the national archaeological, historical, and artistic monuments. Currently, this work is undertaken by the Coordinación Nacional de Monumentos Históricos, the National Historical Monuments committee.
To date (May 2014), fifty-nine historical monument zones have been declared in Mexico (listed here alphabetically by state and locality). Each zone can contain a number of sub-zones and individual building, monuments, plazas, and gardens.
Each zone is detailed on the INAH website (http://www.monumentoshistoricos.inah.gob.mx/index.php) with an accompanying map showing the specific areas that are protected.
